Medicine Man Pharmacy Blues Cap Off Memorable Summer with State Runner-Up Finish
WAYNE, Neb. — After a month-long championship run that captured the attention of Saunders County baseball fans, the Wahoo Medicine Man Pharmacy Blues saw their remarkable season come to an end with a runner-up finish at the Nebraska American Legion Junior State Tournament in Wayne.
The Blues battled through one of the toughest tournament fields in the state, stringing together clutch performances and timely hitting to earn a spot in the championship game. Along the way, Wahoo showcased the same grit and determination that defined its summer season, rallying from deficits and leaning on strong pitching and defense.
Led by a talented roster and dedicated coaching staff, the Medicine Man Pharmacy Blues represented Post 82 and the Wahoo community with pride. The team advanced through district play and carried that momentum into the state tournament, where players delivered standout performances on both sides of the ball. Their run to the finals marked one of the most successful stretches in recent program history.
For many players, the season was about more than wins and losses. Long bus rides, late-night practices, and countless hours at Sam Crawford Field created friendships and memories that will last long after the final out. Parents, grandparents, and fans packed the stands throughout the postseason, providing unwavering support every step of the way.
Although the Blues fell just short of bringing home a state championship trophy, their runner-up finish cemented the team's place in Wahoo baseball history. The summer of 2026 will be remembered as a season of resilience, teamwork, and pride for Medicine Man Pharmacy Blues and American Legion Post 82.
As one fan put it after the championship game, "This group never quit. They represented Wahoo the right way all summer, and our community couldn't be prouder of what they accomplished."
As the dust settles on an unforgettable season, the legacy of the Medicine Man Pharmacy Blues' state tournament run will live on at Sam Crawford Field for years to come.

The Legacy of Wahoo American Legion Post 82 Baseball
Baseball has been woven into the fabric of Wahoo for well over a century. Long before summer leagues, showcase tournaments, and select travel teams became the norm, the crack of a bat echoed across Saunders County as local ballplayers represented their hometown with pride. Wahoo's baseball heritage is unique because it begins with one of the greatest players the game has ever known—Baseball Hall of Famer Samuel "Wahoo Sam" Crawford. Born and raised in Wahoo, Crawford learned the game on the town's streets before embarking on a legendary Major League career with the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers. He remains Major League Baseball's all-time leader in career triples, and when he entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957, his plaque proudly identified him as "Wahoo Sam," forever connecting his hometown to baseball history. Today, Sam Crawford Field stands as a tribute to that remarkable legacy, serving generations of local players while preserving one of Nebraska's most historic baseball venues. The field itself has hosted baseball for decades, dating back to the days of the renowned Pioneer Nite League before becoming a centerpiece for American Legion Baseball and community events.

That rich baseball tradition found its natural home in the American Legion. Following World War I, the American Legion established its Junior Baseball program in 1925 with a purpose that extended far beyond winning games. Legion leaders believed baseball could teach teamwork, discipline, respect, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship while helping develop young men into responsible adults. Wahoo American Legion Post 82 embraced that mission, making baseball one of its signature youth programs alongside Boys State, the Oratorical Contest, County Government Day, Memorial Day observances, Veterans Day ceremonies, and military funeral honors. For decades, Post 82 members have volunteered countless hours to ensure young athletes had the opportunity to compete, represent their community, and learn the values that define both baseball and the American Legion. While individual seasons have come and gone, the commitment to serving Wahoo's youth has remained constant for generations.

Through the years, Wahoo Post 82 baseball has become much more than a summer pastime. Families have watched sons become teammates, teammates become coaches, and coaches become mentors to the next generation. Volunteers have prepared fields, worked concession stands, organized tournaments, raised funds, and ensured that every young player had a place to develop both on and off the diamond. Sponsors from throughout the community have helped keep the program thriving, allowing Post 82 teams to compete against some of Nebraska's finest programs. Today, the tradition continues with the Wahoo Medicine Man Pharmacy Post 82 Blues and the Wahoo State Bank Post 82 Reds, carrying forward the same commitment to excellence that has defined Legion Baseball for generations. Annual events such as the Sam Crawford Classic continue to bring teams from across Nebraska to Wahoo, further strengthening the community's reputation as one of the state's great baseball towns.

The recent championship run by the Wahoo Medicine Man Pharmacy Post 82 Juniors is another chapter in a story that has been unfolding for decades. Every postseason appearance, every district championship, and every trip to the state tournament reflects the countless hours invested by players, parents, coaches, Legion members, sponsors, and community volunteers who believe in the program. Success on the field is certainly worth celebrating, but perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Post 82 baseball is the number of young men who have left the program with lifelong friendships, stronger character, and a deeper appreciation for teamwork, leadership, and community service. Those lessons endure long after the final out is recorded and often become part of the next generation of coaches, volunteers, and supporters.

As Wahoo American Legion Post 82 looks toward the future, its baseball program remains one of the community's proudest traditions. From the legacy of Hall of Famer "Wahoo Sam" Crawford to the young players who wear the Post 82 uniform today, baseball continues to unite generations in a shared sense of hometown pride. The history of Post 82 baseball is still being written each summer at Sam Crawford Field—not only through victories and championships, but through the enduring values of the American Legion: service, sportsmanship, integrity, and commitment to community. It is a legacy built by generations of Wahoo families and one that will continue to inspire ballplayers for many years to come.
